Armstrong State University Finds Success Using Aquaponics in Biology Program


Armstrong State University’s FORAM Sustainable Aquaponics Research Center stands out as far as classrooms go at the University.

In place of desks, laptops, and powerpoint presentations, students learning biology at ASU are surrounded by fish, plants and the relaxing sound of gurgling water as it flows through their aquaponics systems nestled in a 4,100 sqft greenhouse.

The space was built after the University was awarded a grant to study the viability of long-term farming in a soil-less environment. The greenhouse houses four separate but identical systems which allow the university to set up experiments and take a research based approach to growing allowing them to control or experiment with different variables as they see fit. Currently, the team is experimenting with oxygen delivery to the system.

The goal is not only to research the effectiveness of aquaponics as a soil-less grow method, it is also to research any ways that allow the team to eliminate or reduce costs and inputs to make aquaponics more economically viable without losing any efficiencies.
