Is an Aquaponics System Right for Me?

Is an aquaponics system right for me? Yes!
Andrew Ingalls, COO of Trifecta Ecosystems

Hello and Welcome!

My name is Andrew Ingalls and as a new addition to FRESH Farm Aquaponics, Inc. (now Trifecta Ecosystems). I am pumped to start bringing you some epic updates in the world of aquaponics and urban farming.

As the resident Geomicrobiologist, I do the research around here at Trifecta. And I must say we have some pretty amazing innovations coming soon to a garden near you.

So join us on this wild ride to the future of Food 4.0 and the City that Feeds ItselfTM.

So you just stumbled upon our page?

You have no idea what aquaponics is actually about?

You have never heard of Trifecta Ecosystems?!

Seems unlikely…but if that is the case, take a stroll down memory lane and check out some of our older posts that introduce the subject and our company.

Aquaponics, simply put, is a system in which fish produce waste. That waste then gets eaten up by microbes–single-cell organisms so tiny that millions can fit on the head of a pin. These microbes turn waste into usable nutrients for the plants, which in turn help purify the water. As an aquaponics practitioner (we prefer the term ‘aquapioneer’) you reap the benefits: a perfectly balanced and supercharged ecosystem for your home, backyard, school, or farm.

Ok, my fellow aquapioneers. You are here, you’ve done the work, you’ve read the books, and you’ve seen the videos…the only thing left is that nagging question in the back of your head.

Is an Aquaponics System Right for Me?

Well look no further ladies and gents because I’m about to blow the roof off this popsicle stand.

We all believe supermarkets are a necessary evil... but are they?
We all believe supermarkets are a necessary evil… but are they?

Do you like the idea of feeding your family with cheap, organic, and fresh produce?

I just got back from the grocery store this afternoon and it definitely reminded me of a few things.

First and foremost, those places are CROWDED.

It took me 15 minutes just to maneuver my cart over to the vegetable aisle.

I definitely lost a few minutes on the end of my life due to the shear stress of that trip.

However, it’s not the crowds that really bug me, it’s the fact that I can never find quality produce at the store…and if I do, it’s because it came from the organic section and it doubled the cost of my entire trip!

Aquaponics has the potential to make all that aggravation a thing of the past.

Imagine taking a stroll down an aisle of fresh produce in the comfort of your own home, rather than shoving your way down a crowded aisle.

I can feel the stress melt away already.

As well, just think if the produce that you harvest from your home was picked FRESH from the system. Now imagine the alternative where it comes to you after moving on a truck across the nation to sit for weeks in a backroom, slowly decaying before it hits the shelves, and finally, your plate. Mmm….Yum. I know which scenario I’d prefer.

Do you have a thumb that’s not so green?

So you’ve tried the garden scene.

You thought, “Man, I could definitely do this, free food right outside my door?!?!

Sounds GREAT!”

At least, until you found out the cold hard truth: soil is dirty; your back is sore enough to suggest you were a 60-year-old Olympic weightlifter; and taking care of a garden is more time consuming than a puppy that isn’t potty trained.

The greatest part about aquaponics systems is they essentially take care of themselves.

There is no watering the plants, pulling the weeds, or getting dirty in the soil AT ALL.

All you have to do is sprinkle a little fish food in there to keep the fishes happy. Meanwhile your microbes will take care of the rest.

Trifecta Ecosystems strives to make things even easier for you with services that provide you with all the fish food, seedlings, instructions and education you could ever need.

Do you own an aquarium?

What’s even better, if you own an aquarium, this can all be accomplished in the blink of an eye!

I mean you have the basics down already.  That’s right …you know how to sprinkle some fish food into a fish tank.

But here at Trifecta, we have come up with something amazing that takes your 20-60 gallon fish tank and turns it into an aquaponics GROWING MACHINE.

We call it the aFrame: feel free to check it out! We have partnered with Bright Agrotech,LLC., in order to give you vertical farming at its most effective. This small system fits right on top of your aquarium and produces over a pound of lettuce a week!

Have you always wanted a garden, but you don’t have the time or space?

Trifecta has some interesting roots, if you’ll pardon the pun.

We started our adventure in the confines of a single, small room of a Boston apartment with a 20 gallon tank and a few aquarium fish.

Our backyard was a pavement jungle and the closest produce aisle was at a run-down supermarket without a single vegetable worth calling fresh in the entire store.

Aquaponics quickly changed that for us. Within a few months time, we had a completely operational herb garden in our cozy, inter-city apartment.

The aromas of genovese basil, chocolate mint, and parsley began to overtake the toxic fumes of the passing cars, smoking neighbors, and industrial smog. We now had fresh herbs to accompany every meal.

But you must be thinking, “All of this DIY stuff takes so much time, ain’t nobody got time for that!”

Well, that’s where Trifecta can help you out.

We’re transferring all of the time that we’ve dedicated and research we’ve done to you.

We have tested our systems against the extremes and they all came back with resounding results.

We have extensive services that allow us to continue to improve not only your understanding of aquaponics, but also improve our systems over time.

Is your child fixating on his/her computer or television screen?

Trifecta Ecosystems has a mission to bring education to the next generation of budding aquapioneers.

We believe that by working in a hands-on environment, aquaponics has the ability to provide a well-rounded STEM learning ecosystem. One that allows students to think originally, develop innovative research, and design ground-breaking technology in the process.

If you are reading this section, likely your son or daughter is just like every other kid in their generation: their face is always fixating on a screen.

Whether that is the television, a computer, or more likely the smartphone, your li’l one is likely missing the world around them.

Spending time outside is easily one of the surefire ways to increase your child’s creativity, health, and overall well-being.

Unfortunately, not many people nowadays have a surplus of land or wilderness for kids to play on.

Most urban children have never even seen a garden, let alone got their own hands dirty. Indoor aquaponics is the perfect way to get them in touch with their roots.  You’ll keep them happy, healthy, and you’ll sneak a little education in at the same time.

Tricky parents…

Seriously though, the aFrame is an amazing way to keep STEM education going at home. You child will learn everything from nutritional science to microbiology and everything in between.

What we are saying is this: Aquaponics is right for nearly everyone.

By 2025, the World Health Organization expects 70% of the world to become urbanized. This means we need to find alternative sources to healthy, locally sourced food.

Soon enough, our agricultural industry will have to generate enough food to sustain the urban sprawl. A phenomenon spreading all across the globe. Now is the time to start investing into your future and your children’s future.
